While Crime exists everywhere, Hilltop is lucky to be in a district with one of the lowest crime rates in the City of Denver. However, any crime is unwelcome and we should all be aware and proactive about preventing crime in our neighborhood.

The Citizens’ Advisory Board for DPD Dist. 3, which includes Hilltop, Crestmoor and surrounding neighborhoods, meets on the first Thurs. of each month at Dist. 3 headquarters, 1675 S. University Blvd. At the Oct. 1 meeting it was reported that Thefts from Motor Vehicles (TFMV) are still the most frequently reported crimes in the district. Comparing statistics from 2008 and 2009 for all of Dist. 3, TFMV were up 76%, auto thefts up 15%, robberies were down 12%, and burglaries down 10%. Overall the crime rate is quite low.

The Denver Police Department has listed the top six items taken from vehicles. They are:

    1. GPS Units
    2. Purses
    3. Drivers’ licenses
    4. Cell phones
    5. iPod/MP3 players
    6. Credit cards

To help prevent Thefts From Motor Vehicles:

      • Always lock all doors and close windows.
      • Never leave anything of value in plain sight.
      • Never leave anything that looks like it might contain something of value in sight.
      • Park in well lit, busy areas when possible.
      • Close and lock garage doors and side gates.

Since home burglaries have occurred following vehicle break-ins at another location, such as a parking garage, never have anything in your vehicle that shows your home address. Registration and insurance cards should be in the possession of the operator of the vehicle.
