Crime & Safety News

Andy Walvoord – Co-Chair of our Association’s Crime & Safety Committee attended the July 10 monthly meeting of the District 3 Community Advisory Board.  We post here a few observation of his from the meeting:
Through the end of June, crime in Hilltop is still up 21% over 2017. Most of those “excess crimes” are burglary of garages. Most of those “extra” garage burglaries were actually in Crestmoor (which is part of the Hilltop neighborhood for crime reporting). There are a couple of additional assaults as well. Crimes against people are up 69.2% year-over-year, but it’s from such a low basis that the increase is (to me) not statistically significant.
That said, all crime categories everywhere else in our precinct 321 and the whole of District 3 are generally flat or down year-over-year, so we are an anomaly. Burglary in precinct 321 is down 42% over the last month, so that gives some support to the fact that Hilltop was up 40+% at the end of April and is now up only 21% year-over-year through the end of June.
I spoke with Lt. Ron McDaniel who offered to attend a board meeting or other neighborhood association crime meeting. Lt. McDaniel reported that District 3 has been running extra patrols in Hilltop and even some “undercover” operations. We may not be seeing much of the increased police activity since most of the burglaries were actually taking place in Crestmoor.
If you would like to get involved in this issue and help the committee – attend a CAB meeting, report back to the neighborhood or just generally help us improve the safety of our neighborhood, please contact us at [email protected]
