Denver’s Department of Transportation & Infrastructure (DOTI) is designing the second phase of an improved and expanded storm drain system to provide greater flood protection for area residents, National Jewish Health (NJH) patients and staff, and local businesses. The new storm drain improvements will also provide future stormwater capacity for future Hale Parkway improvements.
Phase 2 of the new storm drain system begins at Jackson Street and E. 14th Avenue, tunnels under Colorado Boulevard, and proceeds along the east side of Colorado Boulevard, south to E. 13th Avenue. New storm inlets will be added in E.14th Avenue and Harrison Street, and E. 13th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard, to reduce local flooding. The final phase will head east on E. 13th to Ash Street, and south under Ash Street, culminating at Hale Parkway.
The Upper Montclair Drainage Basin experiences significant persistent flooding during moderate to heavy rainstorms. Areas impacted by nuisance flooding include streets east and west of Colorado Boulevard between E. Colfax Avenue and E. 12th Avenue and Hale Parkway.
A second public meeting will be held prior to construction, which is expected to begin in late winter/early spring 2023.
